After eating, I took Nicole home so she could pack up the rest of her things, and then I went home to wait on Chandra to drop Xavier off. She said she’d meet me there around 8 PM. Once I got home I went straight to my stash in the basement and started counting my cash. After agreeing to let Nicole hold the money I felt an urgency to make it back. I felt naked knowing 1 third of my stack would be wrapped up in some investment.

As I was making my way back up my basement stairs, I heard my doorbell rang. I didn’t have an idea of who it could be, so when I checked the peephole I was surprised to see Xavier smiling up at the door as if he could see me through it. I opened the door matching his wide grin. The boy was a spitting image of me, except he was lighter in complexion.

“What’s up X?”

“Hey, dad,” he greeted me with some dap exactly how I’d taught him.

Chandra put her head out of the driver’s side window. “I saw your car here, so dropped him off a little early. I hope you don’t mind.”

“Nah, we good, Chan. You and Willy have a nice trip.” I said staring directly into his dead eye. He had the nerve to be grinning back. I bet If I told him I’d just hit Chandra a week ago it would clean the smile smooth off his face. She said, we were done, but there was no way she could stay away from my satisfying sausage.

Xavier waved his mom goodbye and we stepped in, out of the cold. My son removed his coat and took a seat on the sofa. I went into the kitchen, grabbed some Oreo’s and 2 cups of milk. I put Madagascar 3 into the DVD player and took a seat next to him. Just before the feature presentation came on Xavier looked up at me. “Dad, why don’t you and mommy live together?” he asked curiously.

Right then, I tried to imagine how his mother would have answered the question, it really had caught me off guard. I studied his concerned facial expression and decided to provide him with the best answer that I could think of. “Listen, X, sometimes things just don’t work out the way you want them to. And remember, just because we don’t live together doesn’t mean I don’t love you.”

I could tell by the look on his face he wasn’t content with the answered I’d given him. I decided to switch it up on Xavier. “How’s school going?”

“I like school, dad. I got a lot of new friends!”

“Word, that’s what’s up lil’ man, always good to have friends.”

My phone rung and interrupted our conversation. “Hold on, X, let me answer this. Hello.”

“What up, Ace? Long time player, what’s the verdict?”

I recognized the voice, but I hadn’t expected to hear from him. “What’s up, Tech?”

“Shit, man, I need to holla at you,
